To stop fantasizing about your dream job and start reaching for it, you need to be fearless. You also need to be your own agent and sell yourself again and again, says sports agent Molly Fletcher.
Her new book, "Your Dream Job Game Plan," offers career-search strategies aimed largely at recent graduates. She focuses on knowing yourself and your passions, developing relationships, and creating a plan for success.
Her advice is based partly on experience: She networked and took temp jobs until she landed her "dream job" as an agent. She's now president of client representation at Career Sports & Entertainment.
Fearlessness means you "must temporarily suspend your need for security," she writes. Fletcher recommends positive imaging -- imagine yourself making a great impression just as a pitcher visualizes throwing strikes -- and sending yourself positive messages. ("I can make this place better.")
Ask for advice, information and connections, not a job, she says. When a dream job appears, indicate your qualifications. But remember: One of Fletcher's strategies is flawless execution, not easy for a professional athlete or a job candidate.
