Unleashing Your Potential Part 5

December 27, 2013 • Uncategorized

Here is Part 5 of my five-part “Unleash Your Potential” blog series.  If you missed Part 4, click here.

We’ve all experienced that moment in life where it all comes together.  It may be the perfect game, landing that big client, or nailing a job interview.  What did you do differently in those situations?  You executed at your highest level.

Execution in the simplest of terms is performance.  That’s how we evaluate whether or not we executed.  But execution is the byproduct of a long process.  Execution requires a laundry list of things to even be in a position to succeed—preparation, discipline, effort, a sense of urgency.

To me, execution is really the final step in the process I’ve outlined in this blog series:

Belief > Discovery > Clarity > Discipline > Execution

Each step builds on the previous one.  You have a solid foundation.  You have committed to the process.  Now it’s time to execute. How many times do you hear a coach in a postgame press conference after a loss say, “The difference in the game is that we didn’t execute.”  Coaches know that sometimes even when effort is there, executional lapses can be the difference between a win and a loss.  You draw up a final play.  On paper it looks great, but your center sets the screen to high, or the guard doesn’t time his cut correctly.  That’s a lack of execution. Execution is about trusting your abilities in the big moment.  It is knowing that you put in the preparation and the work to get you to this point, so now you must maintain your focus and deliver the results.

Your Game Changer Takeaway

As you embark on a new year, think about the process.  If you stay committed along the way and execute against the smallest details every day, you will put yourself in a position to perform when the pressure is on and the lights shine bright.
