Why Employee Experience Should be a Top Concern for Leaders

January 11, 2022 • Leadership

Looking forward into 2022, many are predicting that employee experience should be a top concern for leaders. Why? Because like companies, employees have weathered two tumultuous years that have led to new priorities, and employees hold more power than ever before.

As companies continue to navigate The Great Resignation, it’s important that they shift their thinking to retention and how they can lead their teams to succeed. The Great Resignation is actually an opportunity to reimagine and redefine what we can offer our team members.

How Arthur Blank handled employee experience

Arthur Blank is the co-founder of Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) and Atlanta United FC (MLS). I had Arthur on my podcast and he shared the story about when he first took over ownership of the Atlanta Falcons.

When he bought the team everyone was in his office telling him how to win football games, how to keep his guys, how to sell sponsorships, etc. In the episode, Arthur shared that one of the first things he did was ask his veteran players, “Hey, what do you need to win a Super Bowl? What do you need?” And he listened.

What Arthur heard from his players was, “Our training facility, Mr. Blank, is pathetic. It’s awful. Our pre-season training facility’s horrible. The food’s bad. The beds are bad. The showers are horrible. We need a better training facility if you want us to win more football games.” And Arthur listened, and then he addressed those issues so his players could focus on winning games.

It’s all about pouring into your people and giving them what they need to win.

Make 2022 the year of employee experience

When we think about 2022, I would challenge you to recognize it’s an opportunity for it to be the year of The Great Retention. Retention doesn’t just happen. We have to be intentional. Learn what growth looks like for them. Listen and learn what they need and how we can pour into them, both personally and professionally, so they can flourish and grow, and also yes, deliver for you.
